We're often asked about the differences in the various types of plastic used in our industry. Let's take a closer look at a few!
There are many different types of plastic used in packaging, but for purposes relating to the jewelry and accessory packaging industries, we will focus on two of the more popular types of plastic - PETG (polyester) and PVC (vinyl).
PET/PETG/Polyester - Polyethylene Terephthalate
This lightweight, yet durable, plastic is most commonly used in single-use and reusable drinking bottles and similar types of containers. In the jewelry and accessory packaging industry, we use this plastic for earring cards, fold-over cards, and many of the items we make here in the US. This plastic can be recycled into new containers, pallet straps, paneling, carpeting and clothing fibers, and fiberfill for soft furnishings and sleeping bags.
PVC/Vinyl - Polyvinyl Chloride
PVC plastic is naturally a hard plastic and various chemicals called phthalates are added to prevent cracking and improve the material. There is an ever-increasing list of banned phthalates worldwide, as they are looked upon as hazardous. However, polyester plastics are 100% phthalates-free. PVC plastic is widely used in Asia, as it is readily available and much easier to obtain the PET/PETG, which is more widely available in the US. Dioxin compounds are hazardous and are unintentionally created whenever chlorine-based chemicals are produced, used, or burned. Evidence suggests that, throughout its entire lifecycle, PVC is responsible for a greater share of the nation's annual Dioxin burden than any other industrial product, while no Dioxin compounds are created or used in any polyester plastic.
